Hard as she tried, twenty-eight-year-old Kendra Clayton never quite broke out of her hometown of Willow, Ohio. Now she works part-time as a GED instructor and beefs up her income by hostessing at her uncle’s restaurant, soaking up the local gossip. It’s a quiet life, but Kendra hasn’t given up hope that one day Mr. Right will walk through the door. In the meantime, her sleepy hollow is about to get a rude awakening, and Kendra is about to get some excitement—though it’s not quite what she had in mind.
When her friend Bernie's boyfriend, a notorious womanizer, is brutally murdered, both she and Kendra are implicated in the crime. The only way Kendra can save herself—and the friend she believes is innocent—is by doing some investigating of her own. And the closer she looks, the more suspects she finds.
Jordan was a man that women loved and hated—usually at the same time. Now one of them has crossed that thin line. But between Jordan’s past and present conquests—and a chain of emptied wallets and vengeful hearts—which one could be a killer? As Kendra’s curiosity draws her deeper into the case, she also gets into an unexpected attraction to a man who may hold the missing piece of the puzzle—if she can survive long enough to put it together.

This book could have been so much better. The plot and twists were predictable, but interesting. However, the writing and verbiage made it seem like a novel written for upper elementary students (with the removal of a few adult moments). I kept expecting the writing to improve, but the book plodded along. Many times I wonder what other authors could do with the same plot, and that thought occurred to me many times while reading this book. Oh well, it is the holiday season, so I wish the heroine Kendra much good fortune in future installments of the series!Product details

The Company You Keep Kendra Clayton Series Book 1 edition by Angela Henry Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Had lots of twists and turns, lots of characters to remember. Started out interesting, but as it went on seemed to loose its steam. Did not like the romance part since he was just barely divorced. Seemed like a forced ending with unresolved ? Nothing in ending about Bernice.
This book was so good. I love a good mystery especially one that keeps me guessing. I was hooked from the first page. This the story of Kendra Clayton a literacy teacher in Ohio. One night she gets a call from her fried and Co worker Bernie that her boyfriend was found dead by her. The story takes off from there. you will be glued to your book trying to solve this mystery.
Kendra doesn't understand about allowing the police to solve the crime. She must do it herself; A modern day Angela Lansbury. One of her co workers is accused of murdering her fiance and has drug Kendra into being a suspect to the crime.
Everyone had a reason to kill Jordan Wallace. He's a philanderer, self-centered and looks for women to take care of him financially.
This mystery was funny and quirky because the main character and her ways of getting to the truth.
This was a very good "whodunnit" mystery. It kept me guessing as to who, why and how. I also found it had some funny moments which helped keep me entertained while running through what seemed like an endless list of suspects and motives.
It is my understanding that this is Angela Henry's first book in the Kendra Clayton Series and I thought she did very well. Some people might get turned off my the increasing number of suspects, but I found it amazing that she was able to introduce all these new characters and still stay on point with the story line. I found it hard to put down. I was able to keep up and I figured out who did it before the killer was disclosed; I just didn't have the motive until it all unfolded and I put two and two together.
I enjoyed this story. I recommend it to those who like murder mysteries. I think it would make a good Lifetime Original Movie.
I've followed Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton and other female protagonists for years/decades, the Kendra Clayton series is the first-time I've been not only introduced to an African American "detective", but also to a predominantly African American community. It was very refreshing. Although I must say I was vaguely reminded of Sue Grafton/Kinsey Millhone when Kendra wrote down what she knew - the cast of suspects.
I liked the pace of the novel and I liked how Kendra would reflect back on events to catch the audience up. I've not seen that technique used before, so that was rather refreshing as well.
I thought the ending was rather unlikely, however, but given how the audience was previously acclimated to dangerous stairs it was possible. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and ever so relatable cast of characters. Will definitely finish the series out.
Kendra Clayton is a likeable young women who gets herself into several scrapes by being, as she puts, nosy.
Smart, resourceful, amusing, and loyal, Kendra is determined to prove her friend is innocent of murdering her no-good-nik boyfriend. Kendra is a good friend to have on one's side.
One of the things I liked most about the book is that race is, as well it must be, an important dimension of Kendra's cultural background, but it is not turned into polemics. At first, the reader does not need to know the cultural milieu of the characters; this is only clarified when it assumes significance. And I think this is great! Angela Henry weaves this in beautifully.
One thing I didn't like was being a step ahead of Kendra in solving the case. It's disappointing when an otherwise bright protagonist develops a blind spot like the teens who insist on spending a night in the haunted house despite numerous warnings. The ending was a bit pat -- but I'd have to post a spoiler alert to tell why I think so.
Ms. Henry has created a new female sleuth with a lot of potential. Good job.
Kendra Clayton is trying to clear her name and that of her best friend of suspicion of murder. The writing is good. The mistakes are minimal. There are long descriptions of everything from people's clothing, rooms, buildings, people, etc. etc. None of it has anything to do with the plot or the flow of the story. These descriptions made the story drag quite a bit. I almost gave up on finishing this book more than once. I did like the plot and it did have a lot of twists and turns. Over all this book was ok but nothing special.
This book could have been so much better. The plot and twists were predictable, but interesting. However, the writing and verbiage made it seem like a novel written for upper elementary students (with the removal of a few adult moments). I kept expecting the writing to improve, but the book plodded along.
